Introduction to Sport Psychology and Psychology of the Goalkeeper

In this section we will find a brief approach to psychology applied to sport, as well as what are the psychological characteristics that can be observed and trained in Goalkeepers.

In this section we will discuss the different psychological skills that a Goalkeeper must possess for optimal performance. We will also see how mental abilities influence sports performance and the importance of training them.

When thinking that a Goalkeeper must possess certain psychological abilities, many consider that it is something innate, which leads him or her to want to stand on the goal. These skills may be characteristic of the person but it is also possible to train and acquire them. Psychology has developed techniques and procedures, applicable to the field of sport that allow observing, evaluating, training and acquiring psychological skills for optimal sports performance. These skills are: motivation, attention and concentration, self-confidence, stress, pressure control, effective communication, leadership and ability to get rid of mistakes. These converge and are of great importance when thinking on Goalkeepers who compete at high performance levels (leagues, tournament points, etc). Throughout different notes we will analyze these skills.

It is important the acquisition and training of these psychological skills in children in the stage of developing or initiation, because that allows them to be trained in aspects that will be useful later when playing the game. It is essential to highlight the role of both coaches and parents, when it comes to significantly influencing young Goalkeepers. This will deserve a separate theme.
